Sunday, July 31st, 2011

It begins with a dream. Every entrepreneur that has or wants their own business had it start with a dream. This starts as a passion or a desire to have your own business. Turning this dream into reality is another matter.

What stops you from pursuing your dream? It is usually either lack of capital and fear of failure. If you want to start up your dream business, you need to create a plan. It really should be a written business plan. Before you start writing your plan, here are some of the first steps you need to do.

Research: Study everything you can find about your industry. Is it growing? What new technology or trend will be affecting it? Who are the leaders? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Go online and read blogs and look for reviews on these companies. Read books written by leaders in your industry.

Find a mentor: Find someone that has successfully run a business in your chosen field. Be bold. Call successful CEOs from your dream industry and ask for advice and guidance in starting up your own dream business. The worst is that you will get a no. At the best you will get someone that can guide you on the path to success. You will find most want will want to help as a way to “give back.”

Learn the business: Take a job in your dream profession to gain experience. Learn it from the inside. This could be a part time job that would allow you to learn from the bottom up. Volunteer or come in as an apprentice to a skilled expert. Find out if your passion grows or shrinks.

Knowledge is power. Learn before you commit your financial resources. Learning everything you can about the business will improve your odds for success and remove your fear of failure.
